Goodman Furnace Age

We get this question on the phone almost every week: “How old is my Goodman AC?” Sometimes it’s a new homeowner who inherited a system with no paperwork. Sometimes it’s someone whose unit just quit in July and they’re trying to decide whether to fix it or replace it.

Good news — you don’t need a technician to figure it out. Goodman stamps the manufacture date right into the serial number. Once you know where to look, it takes about thirty seconds.

This guide works for every Goodman unit you’re likely to have: the furnace, the AC condenser outside, the heat pump, and the air handler in your garage or closet. It also works for Amana and Daikin equipment, since they’re all made by the same company.

Step 1 — Find the Data Plate

Every Goodman unit has a silver or white sticker called the data plate (or rating plate). It lists the model number and the serial number. Where it lives depends on the unit:

  • Goodman furnace: Turn off the power, pop off the front door panel, and look inside the upper cabinet, usually on the left side.
  • Goodman AC or condenser (outside unit): Check near the bottom of the cabinet, close to where the copper lines connect. After a few Florida summers, the sun can fade this label badly, so a phone flashlight at an angle helps.
  • Goodman heat pump: Same spot as the AC — low on the outdoor cabinet, near the line set.
  • Goodman air handler: Look on the side of the cabinet or behind the lower access panel. In most Central Florida homes, this is in the garage, a hall closet, or the attic.

Quick safety note: don’t remove panels while the system is running, and never open the electrical compartment. If the label is unreadable, snap a photo and text it to us. We’ll decode it for free.

Step 2 — Read the Goodman Serial Number

A Goodman serial number is 10 digits long, and only the first four matter for age:

  • First two digits = year of manufacture
  • Next two digits = month of manufacture
  • The last six are just the unit’s production sequence

So a serial number of 1806123456 means the unit was built in June 2018. It’s the same rule whether you’re looking up Goodman furnace age by serial number, Goodman AC age, or Goodman heat pump age.

Serial number starts with Manufacture date Approx. age (2026)
2203… March 2022 4 years
1908… August 2019 7 years
1511… November 2015 11 years
1107… July 2011 15 years
0805… May 2008 18 years

One thing to keep in mind: the manufacture date isn’t the install date. Units can sit in a warehouse for a few months before they go in, so your system may be slightly younger than the code says.

The Older Goodman Serial Number Format

If your serial number starts with letters and ends in a “P” or “D,” you’re looking at a legacy format. Goodman used it on some PTAC units — the through-the-wall units you see in condos and hotels — before Daikin bought the company in 2012. Those codes use letters for the year and month, and they’re tricky to read. Send us a photo and we’ll sort it out.

Goodman Model Number Decoding (Nomenclature)

The serial number tells you when the unit was built. The model number tells you what it is — size, efficiency, and type. You’ll want it handy for a Goodman model number lookup, warranty check, or replacement quote.

Here’s how a typical Goodman furnace model breaks down, using GMVC960804CN:

Characters Means In this example
G Brand Goodman (A = Amana)
M Fuel Natural gas
V Blower Variable speed
C Stages Two-stage
96 Efficiency 96% AFUE
08 Input 80,000 BTU
04 Cabinet Width code
C Airflow Upflow or horizontal
N Revision Production revision

Outdoor units follow a similar pattern. On a model like GSX160361, “GS” means Goodman split system, “X” means air conditioner (a “Z” means heat pump), “16” is the efficiency rating, and “036” is 36,000 BTU — a 3-ton system. Goodman air handler models usually start with an “A,” like ARUF, AMST, or AVPTC, with the same three-digit tonnage code inside.

So How Old Is Too Old?

Nationally, a Goodman gas furnace often lasts 15 to 20 years, and an AC lasts around 12 to 15. Florida is harder on equipment. Our systems run nearly year-round, and heat pumps work double duty for cooling and heating. Around Deltona and Sanford, we typically see ACs and heat pumps last 10 to 12 years, and air handlers fare about the same.

Here’s the rule of thumb we give our own customers:

  • Under 8 years: Repair it. Check your Goodman warranty first — you may be covered.
  • 8 to 12 years: It depends on the repair. A capacitor or contactor? Fix it. A compressor or coil? Get a replacement quote before you decide.
  • Over 12 years: Start planning a replacement, even if it’s still running. Budgeting now beats an emergency swap in August.

The biggest factor in how long any system lasts is maintenance. A yearly tune-up catches small problems before they turn into big ones. That’s exactly why we created our Priority Comfort Club™ — one annual plan that keeps your Goodman running longer.

Goodman Age FAQs

How old is my Goodman furnace?

Find the serial number on the data plate inside the upper cabinet. The first two digits are the year and the next two are the month. A serial starting with 1405 was built in May 2014.

How do I tell the age of a Goodman condenser?

The data plate is near the base of the outdoor unit, by the copper lines. Read the first four digits of the serial number the same way — year, then month.

Is there a Goodman age lookup tool?

You don’t really need one, since the date code is right in the serial number. For warranty status, Goodman has an official warranty lookup where you enter your serial number.

Do Amana and Daikin units use the same date code?

Yes. They’re made by the same manufacturer and use the same year-month serial format.

My serial number doesn’t match this format. Now what?

Double-check that you’re reading the serial number and not the model number — they sit right next to each other. Still stuck? Text a photo of the label to (407) 416-8148 and we’ll decode it for you.
